A New Fence in Converse

Converse has its own fence permit, and the city's fence permit form spells out several rules that shape a fence here: how tall it can be, how the posts go in, what the site plan shows, and an inspection once it's up. When San Antonio Expert Fence plans a fence in Converse, we start from what that form says.

The town is named for Major Converse, chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad, who bought the land in 1877. It was farm country first, and it has been its own city since 1961.

A Privacy Fence Across a Converse Back Yard

If you'd like more privacy out back, Converse's fence permit form says a fence at the side and rear can be 8 feet or less. A 6-foot wood privacy fence sits under that limit, and so would a taller one up to 8 feet if you'd like more cover from a neighbor's yard. Converse's code also says side and back fences go along the property line, unless the city manager grants a variance.

How the Fence Posts Go In

The same form says how the posts go in: no more than 8 feet apart, with the footings encased in concrete. On a long back fence, we count the posts at that spacing when we measure.

An Inspection Once the Fence Is Up

Converse's fence permit form also says an inspection is required after installation, and the city's Inspections page says all types of work that need a permit must have inspections. San Antonio doesn't require one for a residential fence, so if your last fence went up in San Antonio, this step may be new to you. We plan for it from the start of the job.

A Leaning Fence or Missing Boards in Converse

Converse's list of common city code violations includes "an unrepaired fence visible from a public right of way with missing boards or a leaning fence." If that sounds like your fence, we can take it on, and a repair can keep the boards and posts that are still sound. We'll check the posts along the leaning stretch and look at where the boards are missing, then tell you what it needs.

Repairing It or Starting Over

If the posts are solid and the problem is a few boards, a repair is the sensible fix. If the lean runs along most of the fence, a new fence can be the better value, and we'll give you a price for both so you can choose. If a new fence is the way you go, we plan it to Converse's fence permit form, posts and all.

The Site Plan for a Converse Fence Permit

Converse's fence permit form asks for a site plan showing where the fence goes, along with the easements, the buildings, the air conditioning and pool equipment, the streets and alleys, and all the property lines. The form also asks for the fence's total length, which comes from measuring the line.

Drawing Your Fence Onto the Site Plan

Apart from the fence itself, the drawing shows your lot as it is now. The job is getting that onto one drawing with the new fence line in place, and we work it out with you. That way you can see where the fence runs against the property lines, the house and the A/C unit before the application goes in.

The Fence Types on the Form

The form has boxes for the type of fence: wood, concrete, brick, approved vinyl and chain link. If you have vinyl in mind, the box on the form reads "approved vinyl," and the form doesn't say what makes vinyl approved, so we find that out before a vinyl fence is planned.

Questions About Fence Permits and Prices in Converse

What decides the price of a fence in Converse?

How long the fence is, since it's priced by the foot, along with how tall it is, what it's made of and how many gates it has. You'll find typical ranges in the price table above, for a new fence and for repairs. If there's an old fence to take out first, that's part of the price too. Once we've measured, we'll go through the price with you.

How tall can a front-yard fence be in Converse?

Converse's fence permit form says a fence in the front yard can be 3 feet or less. That's a good height for setting off a front garden or closing in the front of the lot without hiding the house. If privacy is what you're after, the side and back are the place for it, since the form's limit there is higher. We work out where the front yard runs on your lot before a front fence is drawn.

Can fence work start once the permit application is in?

No. Converse's fence permit form says the application doesn't constitute permission to begin work, and the city's Permits page says that once an application is approved and all fees are collected, the permit is issued and work can begin. So the first post hole is dug after the permit is issued, and we plan the job around that.

Does Converse use the same fence permit for a business?

Yes. The city lists its fence permit application under commercial applications as well as residential ones, and the form prints the same height limits and the same post spacing and concrete footings for a commercial fence. If it's a business lot you're fencing, we take on commercial fence jobs in Converse too.

Does a fence repair in Converse need a permit?

Converse's fence permit form and its permit pages don't say. The city's list of common code violations says to check with its Building Department whether a repair needs a permit, so that's one of the first things we find out about your repair, before any work starts.
